York Imperial Harvest September 20 to October 30, mostly October
1 to October 25; marketing season mostly October 1 to March 30 but some
supplies sometimes available to June 1; average crop 6.2 million bushels
grown mostly in Virginia, Pennsylvania, West Virginia; size medium to
large; skin tough, bright, smooth, blushed to solid light red or pinkish
red, with dots pale or russet, often conspicuous; flesh yellowish, firm,
crisp, a little coarse, moderately juicy, at first sprightly medium acid
but becomes mild medium acid or nearly sweet, somewhat aromatic; good for
eating fresh and a fine cooking apple, holding its shape and flavor under
heat. This fruit has peculiar oblique lines, as though each apple were
leaning a little to one side.
