season mostly October 1 to April with some supplies available to July 1;
average crop 8.4 million bu.; grown mostly in New York, Pennsylvania, New
Jersey, West Virginia, Washington, California, Virginia, Ohio, North
Carolina, and 8 other states; size medium to very large; skin thick,
tough, smooth, yellow or greenish more or less mottled with bright red
which in highly colored specimens deepens to almost carmine, numerous
small whitish or brown dots, prevailing effect red or red mingled with
yellow; flesh nearly white with slight tinge of yellow or green, firm,
moderately fine-grained to a little coarse, rather crisp, juicy, slightly
aromatic, agreeably mild, medium acid; excellent for baking because it
holds its shape; good for pie, sauce, and all cooking purposes; not
generally used for eating raw but is rather good raw when fully ripe.
