Harvest late August into November,
depending on area, but mostly September 1 through October 25; marketing
season mainly September 20 to May 20 with some available into June;
average crop 26.5 million bu.; grown in substantial quantities in 19
states, mainly Washington, Virginia, California, Michigan, New York,
Pennsylvania, Oregon; size medium to large; skin thin, tough, smooth,
brilliant red over yellow with areas of lighter and darker color, striped
red to solid red, prevailing effect deep red with lighter red areas,
sometimes with small areas of yellowish green; calyx end has five
characteristic low ridges or knobs; flesh white, fine- grained, tender,
crisp, juicy, moderately low acid, mildly aromatic; excellent for eating
raw in salads; not generally used for cooking; named accidentally by Lloyd
C. Stark, governor of Missouri, who bit into one at a fair in 1894 and
exclaimed, "That's delicious."
