Gravenstein
Harvest July into September, with main marketing season July 15 to September 15; average crop 2.6 million bu.; grown mainly in California but also in New England and Appalachia; fruit above medium to large; skin thin, tender, slightly rough, greenish yellow to orange yellow overlaid with broken stripes of light and dark red; flesh whitish yellow, firm, moderately fine, crisp, moderately tender, juicy, sprightly, medium acid, aromatic; good for table use, cooking, and salads. Not a storage apple and must be sold quickly. The Gravenstein is said to have been found originally in the Duke of Augustinberg's garden at Gravenstein in Holstein, Germany. Another statement is that it derived its name from being found in the garden of the castle of Grafenstein in Schleswig. In any event, it is a common apple throughout Germany and Sweden and was received by English growers from those countries. The Gravenstein may have been received in the U .S. in the vicinity of Albany, N.Y., prior to 1826.
