September 10 to October 20, mainly September 25 to October 10; marketing
season mainly October to mid-January; average crop 3.5 million bushels
grown mostly in New York, New England, Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and
Wisconsin; size medium to large; skin thin, moderately tender, smooth,
shiny, red and striped indistinctly with deep dark carmine, prevailing
effect red to deep red; size medium to large; flesh snow white, fairly
firm, tender, delicate in texture, mildly medium acid, mildly aromatic,
does not turn brown on exposure to air; excellent for eating out of hand,
in salads, and fruit cocktails where flesh holds snowy white color; fine
for all cooking purposes.
