mostly October 15 to 31; marketing season mostly October 10 to May 1 with
some available to June 30; average crop 2.9 million bu.; grown mostly in
Michigan, New York, and New England; size usually large to very large;
skin thin, tender, smooth, glossy; clear pale ground color is nearly
concealed with bright pinkish red, mottled and splashed with carmine, and
overspread with thin, delicate bloom, prevailing bright red or striped
red; flesh yellowish, rather firm, moderately fine-grained, very tender ,
crisp, very juicy, sprightly, aromatic, medium acid; excellent for dessert
or cooking.
