until May; average crop 8.3 million bu.; grown mainly in Michigan,
Washington, Illinois, Appalachian states, Ohio; fruit medium to small,
rarely large; skin thin, tough, smooth, pale bright yellow overlaid with
lively red faintly striped with carmine; well-colored fruit almost
completely covered with red, which deepens to purplish on sunny side; less
colored fruit has green to red toned appearance; prevailing effect
attractive, lively, deep red; flesh whitish or somewhat yellow, sometimes
tinged with red, firm, moderately fine, crisp, tender, juicy, very
aromatic, sprightly medium acid; excellent for dessert or cooking; fine
for baking.
