million bu.; grown mostly in New York and Virginia; production
declining steadily; size usually above medium to large; skin tough,
waxy, bright, smooth, usually glossy, clear yellow or greenish, mottled
and washed with bright red, striped and splashed with bright dark crimson,
inconspicuous light, whitish or brown dots, prevailing effect deep, bright
red or red striped; flesh whitish, slightly tinged with yellow, firm,
moderately coarse, not very crisp, some- what aromatic, juicy, mildly
medium acid; usually used for cooking. Virtually all go to processors.
