Newtown (Yellow
Newtown, Albermarle Pippin) Harvest September 10 to November 25, but
mostly September 20 to October 20; marketing season mostly September 20 to
January 30, but may extend to June 1; average crop 4 million bu.; grown
mostly in California and Oregon, with some in Washington and Virginia;
size medium to very large; skin rather tough, smooth, or slightly
roughened with brownish russet dots; when fully mature the more highly
colored apples are bright yellow, sometimes with distinct pinkish blush
especially about the base; less highly colored fruit is greenish yellow
shaded more or less with duller brownish pink; flesh slightly tinged with
yellow, firm, crisp, moderately fine-grained, juicy, sprightly, medium
acid, highly aromatic; excellent for dessert, good cooking and baking
variety, one of the best keepers.
