Harvest August 20 to October 30, but mostly September 10 to October
10; marketing season mostly September 25 to May 1, but some may be
available to June 30; average crop 16.6 million bu.; grown mostly in New
York, New England and Michigan and 7 other states; size above medium,
sometimes large; skin thin, moderately tender, smooth, readily separating
from the flesh, clear whitish yellow or greenish washed and deeply blushed
with bright red and faintly striped with carmine; highly colored specimens
become dark, almost purplish red, with carmine stripes obscured or
obliterated; prevailing effect bright red; flesh white or slightly tinged
with yellow, sometimes veined with red, firm, fine, crisp, tender, very
juicy, characteristically and agreeably aromatic; perfumed, sprightly,
medium acid becoming mild and nearly sweet when ripe; excellent for
dessert and salad; good for cooking and baking but less cooking time is
needed than for most other varieties.
