Harvest generally mid-August to early October, mainly late August into mid-September; main marketing season September to October; average crop 1.5 million bu.; grown mainly in New York, Michigan, Wisconsin; size above medium to large when well grown but often small on old trees; skin thin, tough, pale yellow or greenish, blushed and marked with narrow stripes and splashes of red, deepening in highly colored specimens to brilliant red, numerous small inconspicuous, pale or russet dots; prevailing effect bright red; flesh whitish, sometimes stained with red, moderately fine, crisp, tender, very juicy, agreeable medium acid, sprightly, somewhat aromatic; excellent for fresh eating; extra good for pies, sauce, and baking.
