The U.S. Standards for asparagus provide two grades,
U.S. No.1 and
U.S. No. 2U.S. No.1 consists of - Stalks of asparagus which are fresh,
well trimmed, and fairly straight, which are free from decay and free from
damage caused by spreading or broken tips, dirt, disease, insects, or
other means. Unless otherwise specified, diameter of each stalk
should not be less than 1/2 in in diameter. The color should be green over
not less than 2/3 of the stalk

limp
or
flabby
Well
trimmed
means
that
at
least
2/3
of
the
butt
of
the
stalk
is
smoothly
trimmed
in
a
plane
in
a
plane
parallel
with
the
bottom
of
the
container
and
the
butt
is
not
frayed
or
stringy.
