Shad    Alosa sapidissima

A fish of superior flavor, like river herring and striped bass these fish are anadromus (enter rivers and bays to spawn).  when in season this fish is probably in greater demand than any other fish.  Caught for its flesh and popular roe it is a relatively fatty fish. although caught on both the east and West Coast, two-thirds of the commercial supply is landed in Maryland and Virginia. Shad can reach 12 lbs but the average is closer to 4 lbs. .  Shad roe runs 1/4 to 1 lb per pair and average 1/2 lb.
