This fish is widely distributed throughout the temperate regions of the Southern Hemisphere and found around New Zealand and the southern coast of Australia, South Africa and South America.

The Barracouta has a dark blue back, silver sides and belly and smooth skin. It can be distinguished from the related gemfish by a single lateral line. This fish is a large resource caught by trawling to depths of 200 meters, and available year around.
