Other Names   One of the first capsicums introduced into the middle east, the cayenne is the most common pepper grown in the world, with different names in every country.

Shape   Elongate cylinder, wrinkled, curved, cayenne type, 5 to 6 inches long by 1/2 to 3/4 inches wide   

Color    Dark green to red

It is said to be a pre-Columbian cultivars probably originating in French Guiana on the northeastern coast of South America and was named for the Cayenne River, but this is doubtful.  The Portuguese obtained it soon after the Discovery, when neither they or the Spaniards were near the area.

After the discovery of America, the cayenne was distributed to India and the Orient.

In Mexico peppers of the cayenne type are mirasol. guajillo and de Arbol
