Pickles are vegetables preserved in brine. Pickles or pickled vegetables are recognized as different thing in different cultures.

In the United States pickles are synonymous with the pickled cucumbers.  These range in flavor from sweet to mild to extremely sour like dill pickles.

At a sushi bar you often find pickled diakon radish or pickled ginger.

Koreans pickle Chinese cabbage to make Kim chi which often includes other vegetables.

Germany pickles shredded cabbage into its famous tart sauerkraut.
