Chutney called chatni in India which means spicy relish is usually from fruit vinegar, herbs, spices and sugar or another sweetener. The British popularized chutney although theirs are sweeter than the tangy Indian style. 

Major Grey's mango chutney is a type not a brand of chutney is perhaps the most recognized chutney.

Chutney's are not limited to Indian cuisine and in fact contemporary chefs feature chutneys from cranberries, tomatoes to other vegetables and fruits.

Chutney's are often cooked and have a thick or jam-like consistency.
