A bright yellow-orange tuber of the Ginger family, with a much more subtle flavor than ginger. The roots are dried and ground you may occasionally find a whole dried root in an Asian specialty shop.

Used in small amounts to color foods turmeric is a major ingredient in curry powder and prepared mustard.  Turmeric enjoys wide usage in African, Afghanistan and middle eastern cuisines.

It is also used for medicinal purposes and can be applied to wounds to diminish scarring.
