Poppy SeedOrigin Asia
Used Part Seeds
Coming from the poppy plant, the same plant that produces opium, this
seed is a non-narcotic flavoring that is at its best when toasted or baked
before use.
The seed pods are harvested when they are completely ripe and have
started to turn brown, Sometimes the stalk is cut and then pilled
into pyramids like hay stacks. they are then taken to another area
where the pods are cut from the stalks. They are then laid out to
dry in the sun. One pod may have thirty thousand seeds which sound
like a lot, but it may take as much as a million to make up a pound.
The slightly sweet-nut flavor is excellent in noodle casseroles and
cheese or butter sauces. The flavors also go well on baked items and
on fresh fruit
