Acorn  (Table Queen, Des Moines)
Available year around, this squash is acorn shaped of 5 to 8 inches in length and 4 to 5 1/2 inches in diameter.  A flattened round deeply ribbed shape tapers abruptly from the middle to the apex.  The skin is deep, dull blackish green during storage, changing to dull orange diffused with dull green. The acorn squash's flesh is a pale orange, tender, moderately dry and rather fibrous, surrounded by a hard thin shell with a smooth feel except for the ribbing.  This variety has a relatively large seed cavity.  There is also a golden skinned Table Queen and larger variations of the green variety.

The acorn Squash is usually baked or steamed and used as a vessel to hold other foods.
