Conger Eel Conger verreauxi, New Zealand - Southern conger, Japan - Anago, France - Congre de Nouvelle Zelande, Germany - Meeraal, Greece - Mougri, Italy - Grongo, Spain - Congrio

Average length is 40-60 inches with an average weight of 6.5-11 pounds.  The conger eel occurs around New Zealand and Southern Australia. Grey to blue-black above with lighter below, but often mottled.  Fairly common around rocky coasts of New Zealand's southern North Island and South Island. The northern conger is similar but smaller, with an average size of 28-32 inches, and is fairly common in North New Zealand.

Both congers are caught year round on trawlers and are a bi-catch or the rock lobster fishery.

The flesh is white with a firm texture, less oily than freshwater eels. Does not flake readily when cooked.
