Schmidt  This variety is a main cultivar  in eastern orchards, but not considered productive enough for the west.   This German variety  came to America by way of England and has a large , dark mahogany color.  This variety is roundish and flattened  on the ventral side, with a slight swelling along the suture..  The skin is thick and tough, surrounding meaty firm flesh of wine red color.  The flavor is sweet and rich but rather astringent.
