Washington Navels
  This orange is seedless and has an easily removable skin and is easily divided into segments for eating out of hand or for use in other ways, such as salads.  The Washington, Bahia or riverside Navel is rounded orange somewhat tapering toward the apex which terminates umbilicus, the typical navel that gives the variety part of its name.  The size is sometimes large, 3 5/8 x 3 1/2 inches, the color is orange or orange yellow with a rounded base  or somewhat flattened and frequently creased, the rind is smooth, tough and leathery 1/8 to 1/4 inches thick, the flesh is rather course, deep orange yellow, large sacs large, spindle-shaped, plentiful juice, plump melting, acidity and sweetness and well blended, rich flavor, seedless, and of excellent quality.  In California the Navel harvest generally starts about November 1st, is most active November 15 to May 15 and ends about May 31st.  The marketing period begins November 5 is most active November 20th to May 20th and ends about June 20th.  In Arizona, navels are harvested beginning November through February, with the most active period in December, and the marketing period is the same.
