Loose leaf or Bunching
do not form heads.  The leaves are clustered or pressed together, but only the young ones overlap at the center of the plant. Loose leaf varieties are favorites for the home garden and are used extensively in green houses. Common varieties of loose-leaf lettuce are Black Seeded Simpson, Prize Head, Grand Rapids and Salad Bowl.
