 Crisphead distinguished by firm head and brittle texture. The leaves form a head by overlapping one another in a smooth, regular manner. The veins are coarse and prominent ribs are characteristic. the head usually measures six inches or more in diameter. The Crisphead variety is the most important commercial type in the U.S. There are many crisphead varieties of crisphead, each with a set of characteristics that makes it desirable for particular regions. Their firm, solid, crisp, compact heads make them popular. Such heads withstand long distance transportation long distance transportation from areas best adapted for the farming of lettuce. Some common varieties are Great Lakes, Premier Great Lakes, imperial 101 and Imperial 615. Most of the present day varieties were derived from the New York (Los Angeles Market and Wonderful) crossed with various varieties from domestic and foreign origins. There are varieties that do not fit into either Imperial or Great Lakes types. These include Vanguard and Valverde.
