Barely is grown mostly as animal fodder, but it is also processed into malt, which is used in everything for beer and liquor to chocolate and ice cream. It is also an important ingredient in some types of Japanese Miso.

Barley flour is an ingredient in many frying batters because it develops a crispy shell when fried.
