Star Red patented
and released in 1970 the Star Red was developed at Texas A & I
University's Citrus Center, Weslaco, by Dr. Richard Hensz. Seeds of
the seedy Hudson grapefruit, a little known Texas variety of the Foster
Pink, were exposed to thermal neutrons, and a seedling from these
developed a tree with distinct characteristics and fruit with redder peel
and flesh than other varieties previously developed.
