Marsh Grapefruit -
Probably originated from a tree on the farm of William Hancock at Socrum
near Lakeland Florida. The farm was purchased in 1862 from Mrs.
Rushing who is credited with planting the seedling which became the parent
of the Marsh. E.H. Tison a nurseryman in Lakeland first recognized
the commercial value of this seedless variety and included it in his price
list of the Lakeland Nursery in 1889 and listed it as "Budded Seedless
Grapefruit (very choice)". Tison sold his nursery to C.M. Mash, who
later distributed the variety under the name of Marsh's Seedless.
Today the variety is widely grown in Florida, Texas, California, Arizona,
South Africa, Palestine, and Australia.
