Hass
is
the
second
leading
variety
from
California,
with
production
averaging
about
50
percent
of
the Fuerte
total.
The
Hass
is
of
the
Guatemalan
race
but
a
seedling
of
California
origin.
It
was
introduced
by
R.G.
Hass
of
LaHabra
Heights.
The
fruit
runs
from
6
to
12
oz.,
has
a
leathery
and
somewhat
rough
skin
of
medium
thickness,
is
green
at
maturity
but
gradually
turns
black. Hass avocados will turn a dark green or black when ripe, but other
varieties such as Fuerte, will stay green even when ripe.
