Sugar is made by extracting ,
boiling, and evaporating the juice from sugarcane to create crystals of
raw brown sugar. This raw brown sugar can be refined further into white
granulated sugar.
Sugarcane is a tropical grass that looks a little like bamboo and was cultivated 2500 years ago in India. It was not until Columbus discovered and opened up the Caribbean that the widespread use of sugar as we know it today began. Sugar can also be extracted from sugar beets which grow in temperate climates.
