Introduced into Florida in 1898 from Algeria by Dr. Walter Swingle, plant explorer for the USDA. Also called the Tahiti in California the variety was imported and sold in the California markets from early day. Bearrs which originated abut 1895 at the T.J. Bearss farm in Porterville, CA, is so closely related to the Persian that it is believed it was developed from a selected seedling grown from Persian seed. This is the principal variety grown in California.
