Today, Spain is the world's leading producer of quality olive oil; it is
estimated that there are over 215 million olive trees in Spain,
covering over 5,000,000 acres. This amounts to over 27% of the world's
olive production acreage. Spain has an average annual production of over
600,000 metric tons of olive oil. This converts to an average yearly
production of over 645,000,000 liters, or 30,000,000 trailer loads
For years, Spain sold much of its oil in bulk to Italy,
which packaged and sold it under an Italian label. But in recent
years, Spanish oil makers have been selling their oil under their own
labels.
The Spanish must adhere to standards that are much stricter
than any other country. With their sweet ripe flavors these oils
often have a great fragrance and complexity.
