The
Coffea Arabica plant is a relative of the gardenia and Ixora, it is an
attractive tree like shrub with glossy evergreen leaves that produce the best coffee.
This plant is less hardy and more
susceptible to disease at lower elevations than the Coffea Robusta. The
fruit are red when ripe, in the fall, with a sweet pulp surrounding the
bean. Coffea arabica is the largest cultivated of the coffee species.
Arabica coffee contains less caffeine than Robusta: typical
values for roast and ground coffee are 1.3% for Arabica and 2.4% for
Robusta. As a result, the caffeine intake after one coffee cup brewed from
pure Arabica is normally lower than 100 mg, whereas Robusta can give as
much as 200 mg or more per cup.
