Large red deep-water crabs are among the largest crabs caught on the East Coast of the United States. Similar to the common rock crab the differences are its large size, red color, thicker legs, and scalloped shells. Only abundant in certain areas of the Northeast between Long Island and Nova Scotia among the rocks at the tide line to a depth of 2600 feet. It is found mainly in the open clears sea . The Jonah Crab does become available in quantity in shore on the south shore of Long Island during the spring season. The Jonah reaches a width of six inches. The meat is considered of high quality and delicious with a flaky texture and the slight sweetness of crab. This crab is often wrongly called brown or mud crab. |
