Beach Plum   The wild relative of the cultivated plum is native to the American shores of New England.  The fruits are highly prized, blossoming in May but have a habit of fruiting only sporadically. All efforts to commercially cultivate these plums have been unsuccessful.  The fruits have a sour taste which makes them unsuitable to eat raw but make delicious preserves and jellies which are considered to be a New England specialty.
