The basic guidelines for  making a pasta salad.

bulletIn a pasta salad the pasta is the body of the salad
bulletUse just enough dressing to evenly coat all the salad's ingredients.
bulletUse fresh herbs and mix them directly with the pasta or the dressing.
bulletToss ingredients with high density like raw vegetables, in the pasta salad together before mixing with the dressing
bulletSmall pasta shapes should be used to for salad that require the guests to serve or dish up themselves.

Make the pasta salads ahead of time to allow all the flavors to mingle together.  Place the salad in the refrigerator and store at 32 to 38 F.  remove the salad before service to bring the temperature up  and loosen the salad.  A properly prepare salad can be held for 2 to 3 days.  It is also a proactive to keep the ingredients separate and mix to order.
