Octopus are commonly caught in devilfish pots (cone or funnel shaped) among rocks a mile off shore in 100 to 200 feet of water. Practically the entire commercial catch is the Pacific Octopus which is found from Baja California to Alaska and east to Asia. The Atlantic Octopus (O.vulgaris) from New England to the Gulf of Mexico. This species occurs world wide and makes up a large trawl industry off the Northwest coast of Africa. Octopus diet on clams, scallops, abalone, and crabs giving them a flavorful meat. Octopus are marketed in fresh and frozen forms, usually gutted with the eyes removed. |
