Sockeye Salmon
Availability / Population* |
Currently, Alaska is enjoying
record levels of sockeye salmon catches statewide. This is accompanied
by increasing escapement trends throughout the state
with the exception of
sockeye runs in southeast Alaska. |
In the Fraser River, sockeye
escapement trends have shown increases in the past Decade (from 1.5 to
2
million fish). However. these figures pale in comparison to historic
runs averaging 100 million sockeye. In other drainages throughout
British Columbia, sockeye runs have also shown increases in recent
years. |
Sockeye runs in Washington, the
Columbia River and Snake River systems are severely depleted or have
been completely destroyed. Coastal stocks in Washington range widely
in status. Puget Sound sockeye have declined in the 1990s however a
few runs have rebounded in response to restoration efforts. |
With the exception of a few
sockeye that return to the Deschutes River in Oregon, there are no
longer self-sustaining populations of sockeye in Oregon or California. |
