       Spiny Lobster
Palinurus spp., Jasus spp.    Rock Lobster
        Prized
for their sweet tail meat, Spiny Lobsters are harvested around the world
in waters 35 degrees north and south of the Equator. They are found in the
Atlantic from North Carolina to Brazil and in the Caribbean.  In the
Pacific Ocean they are harvested from Southern California and Hawaii with
larger resources coming from off the Australian and New Zealand Coast.
The name rock lobster is used in many countries for the spiny lobster to
designate the clawless warm water variety which is actually a large
seagoing crayfish.  There are 49 species of spiny lobster in the wolf
with the cold water varieties from off the New Zealand and Australian
Coast considered to be the superior product.
