Surf Clam Spisula solidissima Atlantic Surf Clam, Hen Clams, Beach Clams, Skimmers, Giant Clams, Sea Clams, Bar Clams Surf Clams are large clams measuring up to 8 inches across, with white oval shells that have a protective brown covering. Often featured on menus by name as fried surf Clam Strips these clams cannot be fried whole or steamed as they tend to be tough. Surf Clams are less flavorful than quahogs but do have a sweet briny flavor. These clams are chewy with white meat and need to be processed (cut in strips, minced, etc.) prior to cooking . Surf Clams are found along the entire Atlantic Coast of the United States
