| Sow | a female animal which has borne pigs. |
| Boar | a male animal which has matured with male hormones intact. |
| Stag | a male animal which has had its male hormones removed after reaching maturity. |
It is easy to remember hog classifications by equating the animals with their rough equivalent in bovines:
